ZYLIA ABOUT ITS 6 DEGREES OF FREEDOM AUDIO RECORDING SOLUTION
AT THE PRESTIGIOUS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCES

Zylia, an industry leader in 3D audio recording and post-production will present their remarkable achievements in developing an original solution for fully navigable, 6 degrees of freedom audio at two world-class scientific conferences. Participants of the IEEE 7th International Conference on Virtual Reality and the 150th AES Convention will have a chance to hear about Zylia’s most interesting findings in the field of implementing the 6 Degrees of Freedom and 360ᵒ sound into the VR environment. ​

​Years of Zylia’s research on 3D audio resulted in developing ZYLIA 6 Degrees of Freedom Navigable Audio solution – a combination of multiple 3rd order Ambisonics ZYLIA ZM-1S microphone arrays and rendering software, which allow its user to easily capture a live 3D sound scene and implement it in various immersive audiovisual productions. This complete package is perfect for creating spatial, navigable audio content for VR, AR, movies, games and 360° multipoint streaming. 
During the half-day workshop at the IEEE Conference Tomasz Żernicki, CEO of Zylia and Tomasz Ciotucha, Creative Engineer will focus on a strategy for recording sound and enabling the 6 Degrees of Freedom (6DoF) playback, making use of multiple simultaneous and synchronized Higher Order Ambisonics (HOA) recordings. The workshop is addressed especially to all who wish to capture immersive audio scenes for virtual reality or music production. 

"We want to show the practical side of recording with many spherical HOA microphone arrays. We will present several examples of audio in 6DoF. One of them will be the recording we made in August 2020 with the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra, when we used 30 units of ZYLIA ZM-1S – 3rd order Ambisonics microphones. Further examples of productions in the genre of opera and concert performance will illustrate experiential gains of naturalistic renditions as well as creative applications of audiovisual volumetric simulations." – says Tomasz Żernicki, CEO of Zylia.

The IEEE 7th International Conference on Virtual Reality will take place virtually on May 20-22, 2021.  The conference is a forum to discuss new advances and developments in virtual reality by involving researchers, senior technical people, domain experts, and academics together.
 
Another prestigious gathering of experts in audio engineering that happens in May (25-28) is the 150th AES Convention. With over 12,000 members, Audio Engineering Society has grown to become an international organization that unites audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research. During this very important for the entire industry conference, Zylia experts will give two presentations. In the first one, Tomasz Ciotucha will evaluate the 6 Degrees of Freedom 3D Audio orchestra recording and playback using multi-point Ambisonics interpolation. For the evaluation of the proposed approach, Zylia implemented an Unreal Engine-based navigable 3D audiovisual playback system and conducted subjective listening tests which compared the quality of the prepared walk-through music production.

"Navigable audiovisual playback means that the listener can move freely within a 3-dimensional, virtual space. And in this space, the sound they hear changes smoothly as well, corresponding to the position of their ears (its intensity, direction, height, and even timbre) – exactly like in real life. Our solution for this kind of 3D, navigable sound is the most future-thinking approach that can be found on the market at the moment. That’s why we want to share our experience. I think it is very important especially now when we entering a new era of interacting with creative art through incredibly realistic, immersive audiovisual productions." – comments Tomasz Żernicki.

The second AES presentation of Zylia expert – Michał Chrul, Research and Development Engineer, will raise the topic of potential issues that would need to be overcome in order to implement musical instrument classification into the ZYLIA Studio software which is bundled with ZYLIA ZM-1 microphone array. The research, in this case, was mainly investigating the affect of the sound source separation algorithm on classification results.
